John’s favorite instrument is the bass. Without the bass, you lose a lot. No foundation. No low-end rumble. No groove. No life.
John was never good at playing the bass, so he moved onto the drumset. He began playing drums in 2000 with the school’s drumline and jazz band. He also contributes his musicianship to playing in his church, due to the spontaneity of the setting. He later went to college for jazz performance degree at Cal State University Northridge, but ended up graduating with a Music Industry Degree with performance focus on Percussion. He has played in many different bands, styles, tours, groups, choirs, etc. at many high profile venues. He has studied with Brian Ferrero, Bruce Becker, and Aaron Smith.
John is currently signed with Universal Motown with his band, Blueskyreality, but is currently put on hiatus. His current focus is on The Nehemiah Band, Dark Furs, Zak Waters, Monsters Calling Home, and Chong. He also loves playing for friends and other artists who are in need of a supportive drummer/percussionist.
“I love the band environment because it deals with both the recording and live aspect, while you build relationships simultaneously. It becomes organic and emotional.” – John Chong
